Character Analysis of Eveline from James Joyces Dubliners :: Dubliners Essays

Eveline:â Character Analysisâ â â â Reference index w/3 sourcesâ â â â â â€Å"There is not any more hopeless person than one in whom nothing is ongoing except for hesitation (James).† Originally showing up in Dubliners, an accumulation of vignettes by James Joyce, his short story Eveline is the story of such a sad person. Restless, hesitant, frightened, maybe even scared - all these depict Eveline. She is a scared, uncertain young lady ready between her past and her future.  â â  â â Eveline cherishes her dad however is frightful of him. She attempts to clutch great recollections of her dad, thinking â€Å"sometimes he could be extremely pleasant (Joyce 5),† yet has seen what her dad has done to her kin when he would â€Å"hunt them in out of the field with his blackthorn stick (Joyce 4).† generally she has started to feel â€Å"herself at risk for her father’s viciousness (Joyce 4).† Ironically, her dad has â€Å"begun to undermine her and state what he’d do to her just for her dead mother’s purpose (Joyce 5).†  â â Eveline needs another life however is hesitant to relinquish her past. She longs for a spot where â€Å"people would approach her with deference (Joyce 4)† and while thinking about her future, trusts â€Å"to investigate another existence with Frank (Joyce 5).† When, in a snapshot of fear she understands that â€Å"she must get away (Joyce 6),† it appears to steel her assurance to make another home for herself somewhere else. Then again, she is alright with the â€Å"familiar objects from which she had never longed for being partitioned (Joyce 4).† She supports that: â€Å"In her home at any rate she had asylum and food; she had those whom she had known for her entire life about her (Joyce 4).† As she thinks about her past she finds â€Å"now that she was going to leave it she didn't think that its a completely bothersome life (Joyce 5).†  â â Eveline needs to keep the deathbed promise made to her mom yet is frightened at the possibility of sharing her mother’s destiny. Her mom was abuseed throughout everyday life and Eveline pledges that â€Å"she would not be treated as her mom had been (Joyce 4).† She has had a real existence loaded up with hardship and scrapes under â€Å"her guarantee to keep the home together as long as possible (Joyce 6).† When she reviews â€Å"the pathetic vision of her mother’s life (Joyce 6)† she is dubious of what to do and implores â€Å"to god to guide her, to give her what was her obligation (Joyce 6).
